I hung out with this plant for a while a couple years ago. It was growing on a rocky ledge by a cliff abutting the ocean. There was only a small clump of soil around its roots, barely enough for it to cling to and derive nourishment from.
Many of us in this modern world are living like this plant is. We are not emotionally nourished by our society or immediate circumstances. Our spiritual selves are not spoken to by the value system of the culture in which we live. We can subsist, but feel that we are not really thriving. Certainly this is something we should try to change.
I draw encouragement and strength from this plant. It lived and died in that tiny clump of dirt in the salt spray. It set seed and in the following years there were indeed more of its species in that area. We can take examples from nature in our own lives. It is possible to survive in almost impossible circumstances as this plant has done. Homage to the plant. Love to the plant.
